SWPH Mailing List
Introduction
"SWPH-EDUCATION", a closed e-mailing list, has been created and designed to improve communication among trainees and to foster discussion on topical issues. All trainees are subscribed to the list after induction and are removed from the list on completion.
You can join in the talk, start a discussion, or just listen.
Before you start using the list for the first time, a quick browse through this page is recommended.
MAILTALK Home Page
- The mail list is hosted by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) which maintains a series of pages MailTalk.
- From these pages you can access the archives of past postings to the list, make changes to the way you receive mails from the list.
- From the opening page enter "swph-education" in the left hand side box as indicated:

This will lead to the page illustrated below from which you can explore the various features of the SWPH-EDUCATION list.

You will be required to register a password at some stage. This takes a matter of seconds and is designed to ensure that only SWPH-EDUCATION members may access their pages.
Sending and Replying to Messages
Sending
Send messages to all list members using this address: swph-education@mailtalk.ac.uk
Replying
When replying to a message sent to the list you have two choices.
- If you wish your reply to be shared by all list members simply hit "Reply" in your e-mail programme
- If you wish to reply only to the individual, ensure that only that person's address is in the address bar of your outgoing e-mail.
If you use Outlook, Outlook Express or any other offline mail manager you may be able to instruct it to sideline SWPH-EDUCATION post as it arrives to a separate folder that you can browse later.
Commands
Commands are coded e-mail instructions which, when sent to the proper address, can change the way you receive and send mail.
Commands can also configure your subscription in other ways. Most members will not wish to involve themselves with commands and in any case most of list functions can be carried out online from the SWPH-EDUCATION page on the MAILTALK site.
- For those wishing to know more about them, a full list of command formats can be found here.
- For those wishing to explore the command system further here is an example of how to use commands to temporarily suspend receipt of SWPH-EDUCATION list messages.
- Important: Send all commands to listserv@mailtalk.ac.uk (NOT to the SWPH-EDUCATION list).
The suspend mail command consists of the following message in this form (no subject heading required):

The hyphens are required in all command formats and mark the end of the command so that signatures and other following text do not confuse the command server.
When you wish to receive mail again send this command:
